Internet Safety For Kids - Recognizing The Internet Dangers

When you are discussing internet safety for kids, you will probably talk about the predators that are online trying to lure your child to some unknown destination. While this is a very real threat to your child and something that you should guard against by talking to your child and teaching them the various methods that predators use to get their prey, there are other internet dangers that await. Some of them are as follows:

Gambling

There is no way your kid can get into a casino off line as they will spot them the minute they try to get in the door. Online, however, they can pretend to be you if they get your credit card. Online gambling is a growing addiction, especially for young people. Gambling is addictive as it is, but it is worse online. You can combat this problem by knowing where your credit cards are and checking your statements.

Pornography

When talking about internet safety for kids and pornography, you will automatically think of keeping your child from falling prey to child pornography. While that is a very real danger, it is also dangerous for your child to look at pornographic images online. While it is natural for your child to be curious as they get older, internet pornography is a growing addiction. Pornography de-sensitizes people to sex and makes it something obscene. It also debases women. Pornography addiction among teenaged boys is nothing to be taken lightly. There is a difference between natural curiosity and obsession. If your child is spending hours on the computer and neglecting friends, family or schoolwork, they can have a problem with pornography.

Shopping

Obsessive compulsive behavior includes shopping for things online and can end up costing a lot of money and is also an addiction. Yes, online shopping can be a danger as well as gambling and pornography. If your child has a debit card, this can end up costing them, or you, a lot of money.

Insulation

One of the dangers of the internet that is rarely discussed is the insulation that it causes. People start out with exploring the internet with wonder and soon become totally reliant on it for everything. It can cause a person to become insulated from the outside world and limit their social skills. It can also become an addiction that interferes with school and eventually their social life.

Internet dangers for kids such as inappropriate websites, can be filtered. Most people are aware of internet predators and how they can approach kids online. If they do not understand this, they need to find out as predators continue to stalk kids online. But in addition to the above, the internet itself can be addictive. If you find that your child is spending an inordinate amount of time online, it is time to address internet safety for kids and these potential issues.
